Kismet has a happy hour menu, Monday to Thursday which starts at 5.00 and ends at 8.30.

    It is $6.95* which includes:

    *poppadoms and chutneys
*choice of starter, i had chicken tikka which was nicely presented and had a lovely rich marinade on it, and my friend had three generously sized onion bahjis, samosas were also available (vegetable or meat)
*main course of chicken or lamb korma, karahi, massala, madras and some vegetable stuff
    *rice or chips .... chips?!?!?
*then a coffee or an ice cream if you are a child (ageist)

The kismet doesn't benefit from having great parking, its right on the A6 but if you are there early enough you can park directly outside. otherwise there are lots of streets around the place you can park.

Ok so the decor is a little old fashioned curry house ish inside, little paper napkins and so on, but the staff were very friendly and the food was great! I had the lamb korma and the lamb was beautiful, falling apart and tender, I felt really guilty scooping it up out of the coconutty korma sauce :C

Anyway I had all that food and two bottles of Cobra for 11.95 so excellent value you should definitely check it out.

*it's obviously not six dollars ninety five, since its in stockport, but i cant find the pound key on this macbook pro keyboard. any help much appreciated. oh hang on ¢ no that's not it. ¢¢¢¢¢¢¢¢¢¢¢€¡#¡¢**

I recently moved into the area, and my partner and I had walked / driven past Kismet on the A6 multiple times. We'd long been intrigued by their Happy Hour and Sunday Buffet offers, and recently decided to check out the buffet and see what was on offer over the "20 courses" claimed on the A-board.

If I'm being honest, the only real gripe I had with our visit to Kismet was the service. Granted, it was a Sunday, and yes we turned up at a point where the restaurant was not particularly busy, but the waiter just didn't seem arsed. I don't know whether he was going for a broody silent vibe, but it was a bit... offputting. One of his colleagues, on the other hand, who brought some of our food and drinks over was great so maybe just an off day...

Right, the real reason we went - the food. The Sunday buffet deal is £8.95 a person (as of May 19 when I wrote this), and genuinely I cannot complain at the amount of food available for the price.

Obviously, the first thing we were presented with - unannounced, thanks to the surly waiter - was poppadoms and the usual accompanying goodies. We got 4 poppadoms, so 2 each, and they were fine.

Next up was a mixed starter, comprised of some fried potato slices, onion bhajis, samosas, some spicy chicken goujon-style things (which were my favourite) and some bone-in chicken. Aside from some of the chicken being a tad overcooked, this was great and they didn't skimp on the portions.

Then, once you're done with the starters, it's on to the main course. As you might expect, it's self service and you basically help yourself to the contents of the serving station. Our options included chicken tikka masala, chicken rogan josh, chicken madras, lamb karahi, bombay potatoes, a lentil curry I can't remember the name of, as well as the usual pilau rice and plain naan bread.

Of the dishes I sampled, if you'd given me any one of them at an a la carte price I might've been underwhelmed. At £8.95 and help yourself, I'm well happy to munch a little bit of various perfectly decent curries. I probably could've done with eating a bit less, to be honest, but you can't argue the value of the offering.

Not sure how they worked out the 20 courses, though. Didn't really matter, I didn't have the capacity for much else after my second visit to the curries...

To round out with everything else, I don't think they have a soda fountain - the coke I ordered was room temperature-ish with ice, so likely from a large bottle? (For a little family run place, though, not surprising if it is.) The decor is... vintage, let's put it that way. But I think that's part of the charm.

I'll definitely be back... there's more curry to try!

Kismet's happy hour deal is pretty astonishing in its food to price ratio. We were already full after munching on two poppadoms each plus some very nice vegetable samosas and onion bhajis. The main event was not quite as good, my bf felt his lamb rogan josh lacked punch and my prawn massala featured some rather small weasly prawns (I prefer Sainsbury's prawn makhani ready meal). There are loads of main course options with the happy hour deal however, so it could be there's something a lot better. The side dishes of dal and bombay potato we were too full to manage but these were packaged up and I enjoyed them the next day. Service was good apart from everyone disappeared when we wanted our bill. The decor looks like it was last updated in the 1980s with green fairy lights and some rather cold ceiling lights, it's not particularly attractive but charming in its own way.

I'm sure we'll be back as we live close by but as there's quite a few Indian restaurants in our area probably not straight away, as it's not a clear standout.

The Kismet is a pretty decent curry house, by no means the best in the South Manchester area, but you can get the usual large array of curries and on the whole they are pretty well done, and thankfully not usually swimming in ghee.

On Sundays they have a buffet on offer for around £7. This consists of some poppadoms to start with, a huge plateful of mixed starters (and I really do mean huge - its a meal in itself, which is great as I always love the starters most with an curry), and then if you can still manage it, a selection of curries to help yourself to. These are a mixture of Chicken, Lamb and Vegetable curries, none of which are particularly high up the heat scale, and in fact I found them a little bland, however, the Daal more than made up for this and is loaded with lots of coriander.

On the whole it is a good local restaurant, with nice food, decent prices and a friendly staff, what more do you need in a curry house (oh yes - it has Cobra on tap as well).
